The rebranding of America

A piece I wrote for Orange News has just gone live here.

The sentence which really sums up how it feels over here is: “It’s as if America is at once unable to believe its luck, and yet also taking this all completely in its stride.” Everyone and everything feels so positive, so elated, really rather surreal and dream-like, and yet also very real. And while I realise it may seem hard to marry up ’surreal’ and ‘real’, that’s exactly the atmosphere in America – well, certainly in Washington – right now.

You have it exactly right. Whenever we talk about our new president, we talk about how hard it is to believe that we actually made this happen. But at the same time, we talk about how hard it would be to believe it if he lost. There’s something truly remarkable when the better man actually wins the day. Even though it happens all the time in the movies.

I know what you mean, slag. it’s as if Obama’s victory actually shows why his faith in the American people – in people, full-stop – has been well-placed. and as I have said to American friends, America’s standing improves in the world as a result of his election not just because Obama represents America now, but because *the American people chose him*. no more pretending you’re Canadian when you’re travelling abroad! ;-)
