Plot to assassinate Barack Obama foiled
Sorry to end the night on a downer, but this story has just broken. Two young skinheads in Tennessee have been discovered planning a killing spree of black people, ending with an attempt to assassinate Obama:
“Federal agents said they disrupted plans to rob a gun store and target a predominantly African-American high school in a murder spree that was to begin in Tennessee.
Jim Cavanaugh, special agent in charge of ATF’s Nashville field office, said the two men planned to kill 88 Black people, including 14 by beheading. The numbers 88 and 14 are symbolic in the White supremacist community.
The men also sought to go on a national killing spree after the Tennessee murders, with Obama as its final target, Cavanaugh told the Associated Press.
“They said that would be their last, final act — that they would attempt to kill Sen. Obama,” Cavanaugh said. “They didn’t believe they would be able to do it, but that they would get killed trying.”’
In case you’re wondering, the 88 refers to the eighth letter of the alphabet twice: ie, HH, standing for ‘Heil Hitler’; while the 14 is the 14-word ‘mission statement’, as it were, of the white supremacy movment: “We must secure the existence of our people and a future for white children”.
I don’t quite know what to say… except: this is a turning point in American history, what’s about to happen on November 4th. And crackpots like these guys, and fearmongerers and race-baiters on the Right, are in the thankful, and very small, minority. From November 4th, a new page will have been turned in the history of American race relations. And nobody can ever, ever undo that.
