Something to take the edge off

Tuesday, November 4th, 2008

If your as stressed out as I am right now then perhaps this will help.

Listed below are a selection of my favorite emails which have been sent to the England for Obama site since it launched back in February.

Enjoy, these should take the stress out of the next couple of hours:

Obamatrons

It looks like there are Obamatrons in your country too. A country almost under Sharia law. It’s understandable why you would support him.

Maybe you should worry about your own political affairs: where the best buy on prayer rugs is, which way is Mecca, and where to buy burka’s and white flags online.

John McCain to lead the most powerful nation on the planet.

Fortunately …none of you have votes in MY country. I’m of English, Scottish & Native American decent (among others). Yet, I’m first and foremost American, and over here, we’re frankly just not into socialism as much as you and your European friends are. So we’ll proceed in November to elect John McCain to lead the most powerful nation on the planet.

Sorry but it’s foolhardy to have such blind trust in a man (despite being a good man as I’m sure he is) like Obama who has few real accomplishments and little experience to qualify him to be our president. Two years as a US Senator prior to announcing his campaign? Really?

He’s never been in an executive role in his life and he can sit atop the most powerful military and economy the world has ever known? Hardly.

Regardless, we don’t have a national election here. We have 51 separate elections which will determine the outcome. McCain wins narrowly, and “The Messiah” returns to complete his first term as the junior Senator from Illinois.

WAKE UP!!!

If you people are for Obama, something is very wrong in England! Obama is a liar, he makes fun of the Bible (the scriptures) he wants to dismantle our military; etc. AND, to top it off, he is NOT a natural born citizen of the USA making him INELIGIBLE to run for the OFFICE OF THE PRESIDENCY OF THE USA!! WAKE UP!!! This man IS a muslim!  And a DANGER TO AMERICA!!!

THE COMMIE CONGRESS GET IT

So if DEAR LEADER & THE COMMIE CONGRESS GET IT, How much money is going to be left for US to give to everbody else?  You take on the Tliban, you take on the Russkies.  Been a long time, babes, we bailed you out in WWII, & our reward was a centralist domo (FDR) which took us 50 yrs to get out of.  Ha Ha Ha on you.  We get this clown AND YOU AND THE EU ARE ON YOUR OWN.  TAKE THAT.  NO MORE UNCLE SAM TO BLAME.

Video The Vote

Monday, November 3rd, 2008

If you’re reading this in America, you may want to take your video camera with you to the polls. Here’s why:

“Video the Vote is a national initiative to protect voting rights by monitoring the electoral process. We organize citizen journalists—ordinary folks like you and me—to document election problems as they occur. And then we distribute their footage to the mainstream media and online to make sure the full story of Election Day 2008 gets told.”

There’s another great video over at the Video The Vote website. Check it out.

We are not alone

Don’t worry - everyone over in America is obsessed with the election, too:

Two things I didn’t know before I saw this clip:

1. Barack’s been Twittering

2. Americans pronounce it “zeeenith”

Who knew?

Compulsory TV: Recount

Saturday, November 1st, 2008

Those interested in this election, and perhaps confused by what seems like a gulf between the polls and the rhetoric from Obama’s team not to be complacent, should settle down in front of the TV tonight at 9.05pm. Channel Four is showing ‘Recount’, the Emmy award winning film about the Gore/Bush election and the Florida vote fiasco.

Once you’ve watched it, I guarantee you’ll not believe a single poll except the one which counts. You’ll also understand why Barack Obama plans to end his campaign in Florida.

Here’s the trailer:

Here’s a Keith Olbermann interview of Kevin Spacey (who knew that Spacey lives in England?):

What’s black and white and red all over? Jon Stewart at The Daily Show has the answer:

Life imitating art imitating life

About that whole ’spreading the wealth’ thing - thanks to Bob Cesca for reminding us of this brilliant West Wing clip:

I tell ya, watching The West Wing after absorbing oneself in this election is really quite surreal. I’ve picked up on my WW viewing this week - I’d got as far as Season 6, episode 5 - and suddenly, I instantly ‘get’ aspects of it I’d never fully - or quickly - got before (all the intricate discussions of Primaries, for example). Even watching the clip above after seeing several live, real debates suddenly makes more sense.

So now you know what I’ll have to do, of course: watch til the end of Season 7… and then go all the way back to the beginning again. Doh! ;-)

Could McCain steal a win?

Friday, October 24th, 2008

I’ve written about the threat of Obama losing the election as a result of GOP voter suppression before, but the full extent of the Republican’s policy is only now coming to light. Rolling Stone magazine has the full story, but here’s a taster:

In the century following the Civil War, millions of black Americans in the Deep South lost their constitutional right to vote, thanks to literacy tests, poll taxes and other Jim Crow restrictions imposed by white officials. Add up all the modern-day barriers to voting erected since the 2004 election — the new registrations thrown out, the existing registrations scrubbed, the spoiled ballots, the provisional ballots that were never counted — and what you have is millions of voters, more than enough to swing the presidential election, quietly being detached from the electorate by subterfuge.

“Jim Crow was laid to rest, but his cousins were not,” says Donna Brazile. “We got rid of poll taxes and literacy tests but now have a second generation of schemes to deny our citizens their franchise.” Come November, the most crucial demographic may prove to be Americans who have been denied the right to vote. If Democrats are to win the 2008 election, they must not simply beat John McCain at the polls — they must beat him by a margin that exceeds the level of GOP vote tampering.

Robert F. Kennedy Jr. also recently appeared on MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow Show to explain what it all means. If after you’ve watched it you’re not left with a profound mixture of anger and fear then you’re probably not backing Barack!

30 reasons to vote for Obama - No.13

Thursday, October 23rd, 2008

One that’s particularly pertinent to us over here:

I was interviewed by a couple of American students last week - for a documentary about the British take on Obama - and as I told them, the election of George W Bush made us scratch our heads not only at Bush himself, but also at Americans for choosing him. A Barack Obama presidency, therefore, won’t just make us think hugely of Obama himself - but also of the American people for voting him in. Stranahan is right about its effect not just on our opinion of America as an entity or an idea, but on our opinion of Americans in general. As I told Matt and Charlie: I will be actively jealous of them. And they won’t have to go around pretending to be Canadians any more. ;-)
